MTSU student stuck by needle in Peck Hall vending machine

MTSU just sent out the following crime alert to students:

During the evening of October 29, 2009, a female MTSU student reported that she received an injury to her hand when she reached inside a Pepsi machine in Peck Hall to get change from the vending machine. The student reported that she was stuck by a hypodermic needle that had been placed by someone unknown in the change return slot of the machine. The student received medical care and was released from Middle Tennessee Medical Center.

While this incident may be a unique instance, all persons on campus are requested to use caution in removing change from vending machines on campus. Additionally, persons with any knowledge of this case or similar situations are asked to contact MTSU Police at 615-898-2424.

MTSU Students Must Get a (Free) Ticket for Miss. State Game

For the football game against Mississippi State on October 17, MTSU has changed from the normal policy of “Get in free with your student ID” to “Hey, this might be a big game… so get your tickets now.”

From an e-mail sent to students:

Due to the anticipated demand for tickets to the Middle Tennessee football game against Mississippi State University on Oct. 17th, a student ticket distribution plan has been developed to ensure that tickets are distributed to students in an equitable manner, favoring those who really want to attend the game and have an opportunity to pick up a ticket prior to an anticipated sold out event.

Students must present their student ID to the MTSU Ticket Office (Gate 1A) to receive a free ticket. Each student can purchase up to four additional guest tickets for $8 each.

MTSU Alerts finds its way to Twitter

I haven’t seen anything official on this, but @mtsualert seems to be prepping to provide alerts via Twitter. Lack of having something like this was one of the reasons I started @mtsu.

Two tweets (which have since been deleted) were sent today testing the system.

The first was 2:59 p.m. :

“Dear Alana, This is the test message you requested. mtsu is now able to reach you at this address.”

Followed by this at 3:12 p.m. :

MTSU ALERT: TEST MESSAGE ONLY to Twitter.

And now the account has just:

There are no alerts to report at this time, but this site is working.

Unofficially, MTSU had 25,190 students this semester, BUT SOMEBODY SNUCK IN!

~~In response, MTSU has announced an official attendance of 25,191 for the semester.~~

[Update 9-24] Actually, the university released a new number of 25,188

From the article:

Undergraduate enrollment of 22,301 is 4.9 percent higher than last year’s 21,252. Graduate enrollment jumped over 10 percent, to 2,860, from 2,620 in the Fall of 2008.

An Editorial on The TBR vs. Dwight’s

In a rare argument for the sale of cigarettes, it almost seems cruel for the TBR to worry about one business run by a vision-impaired man.

From the editorial:

“In the end, the TBR will do what it wants to do, as always. Despite the fact that there are more pressing issues, tobacco sales on campus will cease. Dwight’s Mini Mart will take a loss in profits, and be left vulnerable to competition by the giant Aramark, since cigarettes were a major competitive advantage for Dwight.”

MTSU Sets Unofficial Record of 25,190 for the Fall Semester

From The Tennessean – MTSU has broken the 25k student mark with an unofficial count of 25,190 for the fall ’09 semester. Though, this number will most likely drop as the semester progresses.

“This is a little over 5.5 percent over last year” – Sherian Huddleston, associate vice president for enrollment service.
